 Bone Grafting Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone with material from the patient's own body or with an artificial, synthetic, or natural substitute. The graft not only replaces missing bone, but also helps your body regenerate its own bone. New bone growth strengthens the grafted area by forming a bridge between your existing bone and the graft material. Over time, your own newly-formed bone will replace much of the grafted material! When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area begins to atrophy and reabsorb. If the bone has deteriorated enough, the patient may not be a good candidate for a dental implant to replace the missing tooth. With bone grafts, we can grow new bone in these areas . . . more than enough to support a dental implant, and restore that beautiful smile! |
