Mercury Removal
The Mercury Controversy It’s been a controversial topic in dentistry for years. One that, to this day, is still hotly debated. The conventional procedure for dealing with a dental cavity involves removing the decay with a dental drill and then filling the void with dental amalgam. First introduced in France in the early 1800’s, dental amalgam contains a mixture of mercury and other metals. The use of amalgam has been the restorative method of choice for many years, because of its ease of application, strength, durability and bacteriostatic effects. Controversy over the use of mercury in dental amalgam dates back to its inception, yet study after study shows no ill effects. The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs concluded in 2006 that dental amalgam is safe and effective for tooth restoration. A completely separate study also showed that amalgam fillings pose no personal health risk. The doctors at Brookview Dental have seen the research, heard the arguments, and talked with hundreds of people, and are confident they can provide healthy options and can counsel you in the rationale for treatment. An Alternative Modern composite materials that contain no mercury or bis phenol are now commonly used in place of conventional amalgam. Any of our patients can choose this excellent alternative for new fillings. Removal of Old Amalgam Fillings Our doctors are especially knowledgable in removing existing amalgam fillings and replacing them with non-metal alternatives. Special precautions are taken during amalgam removal to prevent pieces of the old filling from being swallowed or mercury vapor from being inhaled in the process. We believe Dr. Schultz is one of only a handful of dentists in the area who strictly adheres to this removal protocol. Mercury Removal Protocol:
